|Title: Mobile Biometrics – Trends and Issues

Mobile biometrics is useful when a handheld or movable identifying solution is needed. More recently, smart phones provide built-in biometric solutions for unlocking a phone and extend their usages in FinTech, IoT and Healthcares. In this talk, trends on mobile biometrics are introduced with some empirical works in implementing multiple mobile biometrics. Mobile iris and fingerprint recognition will be presented more in detail, and empirical works on phone include touchless fingerprint recognition, iris recognition and touchless palmprint recognition.
Prof. Jaihie Kim is a professor at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Yonsei University in South Korea. Prof. Kim’s general research interests include biometrics, pattern recognition and computer vision. Specifically, some of his recent research topics include mobile fingerprint recognition, mobile iris recognition, fake biometrics detection, 2D-to-3D face modeling and face age estimation/synthesis. Prof. Kim is the author of many international technical journals and conferences which can be found at ‘http://cherup.yonsei.ac.kr/’, and Prof. Kim is a member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea, and an Emeritus President of the Institute of Electronics Engineers of Korea.

|Title: Fuzzy Set Theory in Data Analysis

Fuzzy set theory introduced by Lotfi Zadeh in 1965 is an extension of the classical set. It is a way to understand or explain uncertainty occurring in everyday life. Since then there are many theories and applications developed based on Fuzzy set theory. One of the areas that Fuzzy set theory has an impact on is the area of data analysis, especially, data mining. One of important parts in data mining is classification or sometimes called decision making. There are three parts in this talk on the usage of the Fuzzy set theory in decision making. The first part of the talk is how to manage a fuzzy vector. In particular, a theory of how the function will perform if the function inputs are fuzzy vectors not vectors of number. Another is how to incorporate the Fuzzy set theory into generating a set of feature in the classification problem. The last part of the talk is how to incorporate the Fuzzy set theory into string grammar pattern recognition because pattern sometimes is not a vector of number but a string describing the object characteristics.
Sansanee Auephanwiriyakul (S’98–M01) received the Ph.D. degree in computer engineering and computer science from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 2000. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering, Chiang Mai University, Thailand. Dr. Auephanwiriyakul is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). She is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy System, and is an Editorial Board of the Neural Computing and Applications, an Editorial Board of the International Journal of Computational & Neural Engineering, and an Editorial Board of the Engineering Journal, Chiang Mai. She was a Guest Editor of the Journal of Advanced Computational Intelligence and Intelligent Informatics in 2004. She was a General Chair of the IEEE International Conference on Computational Intelligence in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (CIBCB 2016). She was a Technical Program Chair, Organizing Committee in several major conferences including the IEEE International, Conference Fuzzy Systems as well. She is also a chair of the IEEE Computational Society – Women in Computational Intelligence and a member of four important IEEE organizations, i.e., Fuzzy System Technical Committee, Bioinformatics and Bioengineering Technical Committee, Data Mining and Big Data Analytics, and Student Activities – IEEE Computational Society. As a part of these committee members, she has to promote the research, development, education, and understanding of the technology, including the creation of the theory and models as well as their applications. She was a member of IEEE P1855 Workgroup for Fuzzy Markup Language Standardization as well. As a role of administrator, Dr. Auephanwiriyakul has worked in promoting research in the Chiang Mai University as a director of Research Administration Center (2010 – 2012), a director of Biomedical Engineering Center (2007 – 2010) and a Computer Engineering Department Head (2013 – 2017). Now she is an associate director at the Biomedical Engineering Institute, Chiang Mai University (2017 – ). As a role of researcher, she has written many conference papers that have been published in several major conferences, e.g., the IEEE International Conference Fuzzy Systems and journal papers published in several major journals including IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering. She wrote several textbooks in Thai including Digital Image Processing, as well.

|Title: IoT Crop Field Monitoring and Practice of Precision Agriculture in the North of Thailand (Case Study in an Edamame Farm)

Climate–smart agriculture is one of the techniques that maximize agricultural outputs through proper management of inputs based on climatic conditions. We have developed Internet of Things (IoT)-based field environment monitoring technology appropriate for tropical country like Thailand. Demonstration has been made in vineyard, rice paddy, edamame field, lemon and eggplant farms. In this lecture, the practice in edamame farm will be focused. The results demonstrate that field parameters such as air temperature, humidity, soil moisture, and precipitation greatly influence the crop yield and that these variables closely correlate to each other. Furthermore, it was shown that the weather parameter data can be a useful tool not only for monitoring the farm efficiently, but also for predicting future crop yield.
Teerakiat Kerdcharoen received BSc in Chemistry and MSc in Physical Chemistry from Chulalongkorn University in 1990 and 1992, respectively. As an Austrian-Thailand Exchange Student, he received his PhD in Chemical Physics from University of Innsbruck, Austria in 1995. Presently, he is an assistant professor in the Department of Physics at Mahidol University. He was a recipient of the Thailand Young Scientist Award in 2001. His research works were recognized as the Thailand Research Fund’s Outstanding Research in 2008, NECTEC’s Top Ten Outstanding Research in 2008 and Mahidol University’s Publication Prize in 2009 and 2017, National Research Council of Thailand’s Invention Awards in 2015 and 2017. His research theme is “Artificial Senses” which cover the topics of electronic nose, electronic tongue and tactile sensors, etc., for applications in agri-food, healthcare and environmental industries. He has published more than 150 papers archived in the ISI/SCOPUS/IEEE databases and owned 10 patents. Currently, he is participating in developing and co-founding of several technology start-ups related to intelligent sensors with applications in precision agriculture, smart health and artificial intelligence.
